The village "on the road"
Santa Maria del Cami was once a rest stop along the old Roman road that connected Palma with Pollentia; hence the nickname "del camí" or "along the way". Today's highway bypasses Santa Maria, so the town has, despite its excellent transport links, plenty of peace and quiet. The name of the village dates back to the parish church of Santa Maria, which was first mentioned in records in 1216. The massive nave and the magnificent Baroque façade was built in the 18th century. The blue brick church tower is visible from afar and with the silhouette of the Tramuntana Mountains in the background portrays a beautiful postcard image.

A sightseeing tour
Santa María del Cami is also connected to the railway, so many visitors start their tour at the old station. Here you find a striking historical railway station clock that stopped long ago. In the 19th century the town was a major centre for the textile industry. It has produced the very popular island-style fabric pattern, the so-called "robes de llengos" up until the current day. It is a cloth that has been traditionally used for curtains. Blue patterns are woven on a white background, reminiscent of the tongues of a flame ("llengos"). Meanwhile, the fabrics are available in various colour combinations. Interior designers are using them as covers for furniture or wallpaper patterns.

Agriculture also plays a large role in the tradition-conscious community. The fertile triangle between Consell and Binissalem and Santa Maria del Cami is known for its exquisite wines. Under the protected designation of its origin, "Binissalem" is grown here among other indigenous varieties such as "Manto Negro" and "Callet". The results are best tested at a wine tasting event in the winery "Macia Batle", which has its headquarters in Santa Maria del Cami. Originally built in the 19th century, the winery is among the largest on the island and has produced numerous award-winning wines.
